What you may not be aware is what exactly is LP and what does it mean in terms of albums? This is something that many people do not understand, or know how to determine. First, you should be aware that LP is short for Long Playing. This means that the LP albums typically play much longer than the smaller albums, regardless of what is actually on the album. Typically, LP albums are associated with the large full-length albums that were released in the past. Most LP albums were released in a paper sleeve, which was contained inside a leather or cardboard "book" which was used as the case for the LP album.
Some bad news about vinyl record LP's is that they are made from vinyl plastic, which does mean they can melt, as well as are prone to breakage if they are not properly stored. This means that while the vinyl record LP will not break if used in a normal manner consistent with playing for musical purposes. If the records are dropped, or even handled badly they can become scratched or damaged which can cause problems with playing music. Additionally, vinyl record LP's also can become overheated which can cause the record to warp if the plastic becomes too hot and it is not laying on a perfectly flat surface. This can create problems that cannot be repaired. However, vinyl record LP's became a very popular media format in the 1930's with most music being shipped to radio stations in the vinyl albums rather than on shellac as they previously had been. While some vinyl albums are manufactured still to this day, the majority of vinyl albums that are in existence today are from many years ago, which shows that vinyl album LP's are a very durable media form for music even still today. While most radio stations have changed to CD's many DJ's in the clubs do, still use vinyl record LP's which makes them a very popular format with the music professionals. With LP's being available in 12 inch sizes as well as 10 inch sizes so that there are several options available. The LP albums play at a maximum rate of 33 ˝ rpm or rotations per minute, which provides the extended playing time that is necessary in order to be qualified as a long-playing album. With numerous other formats available the LP is by far the most popular that provides the greatest amount of playtime available as well as the widest range of music available. With more music available on LP's than other formats it is generally harder to find a rare vinyl album in a LP format compared to some of the other formats. Because LP was much more popular format, it is generally easier to find rare albums in the other formats. Because the LP has been so durable for so many years, it is still a favorite and will likely remain a favorite for many years. |
